Flatback Turtles are unique as the only sea turtle species whose hatchlings remain in coastal waters. They remain over the Australian continental shelf and although they are found in the waters of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea they only nest on Australian beaches. Some of the many threats to turtles are: Unsustainable coastal development that impacts on turtle habitat; Conflict with human activity including incidental capture in fishing gear and boat strike; and Marine debris like discarded fishing gear, petroleum by-products, and other plastic garbage that injures turtles through ingestion and entanglement.
